What to Expect at Your First Psychiatric Appointment in Leesburg, FL
Taking the first step toward psychiatric care can feel intimidating. Many people wait months or even years before making an appointment, partly because they are not sure what the process looks like or what will be asked of them. This post is meant to take the mystery out of it.
Here is exactly what to expect at your first appointment at Seasons of Wellness in Leesburg, FL.
Before your appointment
After booking online at seasonsofwellness.intakeq.com or by calling (352) 763-3877, you will receive intake paperwork to complete before your visit. This typically includes:
Personal and demographic information
A summary of your current concerns and symptoms
Your psychiatric and medical history
A list of current medications and dosages
Family psychiatric history
Relevant social history
Completing this paperwork thoroughly before your appointment helps us make the most of your time together. The more detail you can provide, the better picture we have going into the evaluation.
What to bring
A valid photo ID
Your insurance card
A list of current medications including dosages
Any previous psychiatric records or evaluations if you have them
If you are bringing a child, a parent or legal guardian must be present
What happens during the appointment
Your first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. This is not a quick check-in. It is a thorough clinical conversation designed to give us a complete picture of who you are, what you are experiencing, and what has brought you in.
We will discuss:
Your current symptoms and how long you have been experiencing them
How your symptoms affect your daily life, relationships, and work or school
Your personal and family psychiatric history
Your medical history and any physical health conditions
Your current medications and any past psychiatric medications you have tried
Your social history, including significant life experiences that may be relevant
Your goals for treatment
We will not rush this process. Understanding your full picture is the foundation of accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
Will I leave with a diagnosis?
In many cases, yes. After a comprehensive evaluation, we are often able to provide a diagnosis or a working diagnosis at the first appointment. In some situations, particularly when the picture is complex or additional information is needed, we may want to gather more history or complete additional assessments before finalizing a diagnosis. We will always be transparent with you about where we are in that process.
Will I leave with a prescription?
Not always at the first appointment. Prescribing psychiatric medication is a clinical decision that should be based on a thorough evaluation, not a rushed first impression. In some cases, particularly when symptoms are clear and a diagnosis is straightforward, we may begin medication at the first visit. In other cases, we may want to complete the evaluation fully before making medication recommendations. We will explain our reasoning either way.
What if I am bringing a child?
For children and adolescents, the first appointment follows a similar format with some adjustments. We will speak with the parent or guardian as well as the child, gathering history from both perspectives. For younger children, much of the clinical history comes from parents and teachers. For teenagers, we also spend time speaking with them directly, with and without the parent present, depending on age and clinical appropriateness.
A parent or legal guardian must be present at all appointments for minor patients.
What happens after the first appointment?
At the end of your first visit, we will discuss next steps together. This may include:
A diagnosis and treatment plan
A prescription if medication is recommended
A follow-up appointment to monitor your response to treatment
Referrals to therapists or other providers if needed
Additional assessments such as GeneSight pharmacogenetic testing or QbTest for ADHD
Psychiatric care is a process, not a single event. Your first appointment is the beginning of a relationship, not a one-time transaction.
You do not have to have everything figured out before you come in
Many people hesitate to seek psychiatric care because they are not sure their symptoms are serious enough, or they do not know exactly what is wrong. You do not need to have a diagnosis in mind before booking. You do not need to have the right words. You just need to show up. Figuring out what is going on is our job.
